Toddler Theology

Over the past few weeks, in our family discussions and "preparing for school" conversations with Reece, we have been reminding him that God is with us and goes with us and will be with him as he begins school, etc.. He would frequently comment on how he was soon going to go to school and God was going to go with him. Here are a few recent "Reece insights" that have made us smile, laugh, and have challenged us in the complex job of explaining God to a young child....

Several days ago in the bathroom. Benjy trying to explain the importance and logistics of going to the potty independently at school:

Benjy: okay Reece, when you hafta go potty at school, you don't need the teachers to wipe your bum when you go poop if you can learn now to wipe your own bum. Here is some toilet paper. Go ahead and try to do it on your own.

Reece: But if God is going with me to school why can't God wipe my bum.

In the van. Driving home from his first day of school yesterday, talking about how his day went...
Reece: So why didn't God go to school with me for real?
Me: Well, He was there with you Reece. Remember how we talked about how He lives in our heart and goes with us.
Reece: Ya, but why wasn't He there with me for real?

Ahhhhh, tough one.

So it begins! After cracking up - I had to think, Reece hits the nail on the head with why so many struggle in understanding God's presence and purpose in our everyday lives. Not to be crude, but sometimes our biggest disappointments came because expectations were that He would wipe our bum, and we're disappointed with less than that.
That's preachable, Reece. :-)

Amazing what simple insight God gives us through our kids. What I think is wonderful and celebrate - able is that Reece has two parents who train his Spiritual eyes, even now, to see His creator everywhere. It takes practice... but one day, when He relates a prayer on the playground or helps you see God when you yourself weren't looking.... you'll know the hard stuff is understood by Reece's spirit.

Love you guys a ton.

That Reece is a trip! What I really dig is that kids ask questions that grownups want to ask but have learned that we shouldn't... We sometimes blindly accept things that it just might be healthy for us to question. Even if there is no clear answer...

The more mysterious He gets... the more beautiful He gets!

How those wonderful incidents help to ease the pain of letting go. I agree with your previous bloggers, that children are so trusting in what we teach them and you two have done such a good job and God has blessed you with two fine sons to practice on. Way to go! Even as adults we need to have such trusting faith that God is with us all the time and He cares.
God go with you.
Love,
Mom
